Michael Breakspear, Professor of Neuroscience and Psychiatry at the University of Newcastle, Australia, visits Jagust Lab as Gloria Sedran Visiting Scientist

July 28, 2023

Professor Breakspear leads the Systems Neuroscience Group at the University of Newcastle and Hunter Medical Research Institute. Professor Breakspear studied medicine, with degrees in Arts and Science and is a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. His talk “Towards a Unified Model of Brain Dynamics: Reconciling Geometry, Connectivity, and Cytoarchitecture” was widely attended by lab members and the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute. Many students and postdocs had the opportunity to discuss his work and their own research.

berkeley aging cohort study reception 2019

In early June we held our second Berkeley Aging Cohort Study reception. Around 100 participants joined lab members in Li Ka Shing to socialize over food and drinks, and to hear a lecture from Dr. Bill Jagust about all the exciting research that has come out of the lab as a result of their dedication to the study. We were incredibly excited about this opportunity to express our gratitude to all our participants.

Bill Jagust and Daniela Kaufer win the 2018 Radical Ideas in Brain Science Challenge!

Thanks to the generosity of Berkeley Brain Initiative donors, Bill Jagust and Daniela Kaufer will receive up to $190,000 over two years. They will use these funds to investigate the relationship between blood-brain barrier (BBB) breakdown and age-related cognitive impairment. Our lab will use brain imaging to directly compare BBB dysfunction in older adults with AD biomarkers and memory functioning. The Kaufer lab will use a mouse model of amyloid deposition, and experimentally mimic BBB breakdown in order to investigate how specific mechanisms of dysfunction may relate to amyloid accumulation.

Lifestyle and Brain Health Conference March 2017

The Jagust and Chetelat labs have been collaborating for some time sharing data, researchers, and ideas because we have similar research interests. The Chetelat lab (website) is based in Caen, France so we usually have meetings over Skype.  However, in March we met in Berkeley for a three day conference to jumpstart future collaboration projects.  Some future projects discussed involve studying brain health in relation to lifestyle such as stress, diet, exercise, and occupation. Below are some photos from the time we spent together.
